You may be interested in clothing, costumes, sewing and want to help make items or look after our costumes. you may want to asssit us with the office side of things or you may want to help in a more general way in a creative and friendly atmosphere. Volunteers come from all backgrounds and picking out aspects of the roles listed below, combine them to suit their interests, skills and experience, as well as support personal aims such as broadening their skill-set, sharing established skills, gaining work experience, or enhancing a CV.
We ask volunteers to work a minimum of 4 hours a week, due to Covid you can currently only volunteer 1 day a week if we have spaces.
The days available are Tuesdays 10am to 2pm and Fridays between 10am and 6pm. We can possibly make further arrangements for work placements or internships.
We provide induction, training and peer support to new volunteers. We offer support and supervision, as well as additional training opportunities, which include bespoke sewing skills sessions. We cover standard travel expenses, and all volunteers are fully insured while working with us.
Volunteer roles include:
STORE ASSISTANT: This role is for anyone interested in volunteering in a creative environment, and no previous experience is required. You could be attending to customers by helping them find costumes in the store; listing and checking off costumes as they leave or are returned to us. You would also help to make Gladrags a welcoming place by greeting customers; working in an inclusive team; tidying and organising costumes, props and accessories.
COSTUME STYLING ASSISTANT: You may have knowledge in costume or dress history or may be studying a relevant subject (e.g. fashion or textiles). This role entails sourcing costumes for customers; researching and styling outfits for individuals and groups; helping to curate costume collections (e.g. for a particular theme); preparing costumes for display or photographic purposes; labelling and measuring garments for customer viewings or for storage.
ARTS AND ADMIN ASSISTANT: this role provides the opportunity to be creative in the realms of PR and administration. Marketing tasks could include producing content and design for publication and social media; contributing to event preparations and PR. Admin duties could include keeping mailing lists up to date; working with database systems; HR, reception and office duties.
RECYCLING AND VINTAGE SALES ASSISTANT: this role involves assessing and sorting donated vintage clothing, fabrics and costumes for giving away or to sell; measuring and pricing garments and assisting with both our online selling platforms or vintage sales events; dealing with visitors viewing our items to be re-homed; helping to promote our recycling and sustainability work.
COSTUME AND PROPS MAKER: You could share or develop your skills repairing, restoring or customising costumes, accessories and props. You could also be making new items, such as garments, hats, props, as well as replicating historical artefacts for school and/or reminiscence resource boxes.
OUTREACH HELPER: Depending on your area of interest, you would be helping prepare resources for our workshops and activities in various communities experiencing hardship. You would also support our workshop leaders in delivering, for example, reminiscence sessions with older people experiencing isolation; sewing and textile workshops for children with special educational and emotional needs; storytelling and dress-up activities for local children and families.
