Isobel and Charlie take a break from volunteering for some dressing-up fun

"Gladrags is a very friendly and approachable organisation which works hard to individually accommodate all its volunteers’ needs. I have gained many new skills and my experience with Gladrags has given me a confidence to apply for professional community based work which I have been successful in doing."

Jessie Martelhof

Gladrags is run largely by volunteers and we have ongoing opportunities on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays between 10am until 6pm. Please get in touch via the form below if you would like to help us make a difference in our community.

We believe volunteering should be a rewarding and fun experience and therefore we tailor a volunteer’s role as much as possible to suit them. You may be interested in clothing, costumes, sewing and want to help make items or look after our costumes. You may want to assist us with the office side of things or you may want to help in a more general way in a creative and friendly atmosphere. See Volunteer Testimonials to find out what others are getting up to,

Volunteers come from all backgrounds and you may want to pick out aspects of the roles listed below and combine them to suit your interests, skills and experience, as well as support personal aims such as broadening your skill-set, sharing established skills, gaining work experience, or enhancing a CV.

We ask volunteers to work a minimum of 4 hours, once a week, though you may volunteer for more than one day.

The days available are Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays between 10am and 6pm. We can possibly make further arrangements for work placements or internships.

We provide induction, training and peer support to new volunteers. We offer support and supervision, as well as additional training opportunities, which include bespoke sewing skills sessions. We cover standard travel expenses, and all volunteers are fully insured while working with us.

Volunteer roles include:

STORE ASSISTANT: This role is for anyone interested in volunteering in a creative environment, and no previous experience is required. You could be attending to customers by helping them find costumes in the store; photographing, listing and checking off costumes as they are hired out or are returned to us. You would also help to make Gladrags a welcoming place by greeting customers; working in an inclusive team; tidying and organising costumes, props and accessories.

COSTUME STYLING ASSISTANT: You may have knowledge in costume or dress history or may be studying a relevant subject (e.g. fashion or textiles). This role entails sourcing costumes for customers; researching and styling outfits for individuals and groups; helping to curate costume collections (e.g. for a particular theme); preparing costumes for display or photographic purposes; labelling and measuring garments for customer viewings or for storage.

RECYCLING AND VINTAGE SALES ASSISTANT: this role involves assessing and sorting donated vintage clothing, fabrics and costumes for giving away or to sell; measuring and pricing garments and assisting with both our online selling platforms or vintage sales events; dealing with visitors viewing our items to be re-homed; helping to promote our recycling and sustainability work.

COSTUME AND PROPS MAKER: You could share or develop your skills repairing, restoring or customising costumes, accessories and props. You could also be making new items, such as garments, hats, props, as well as replicating historical artefacts for school and/or reminiscence resource boxes.
